I 1.1) чинукИндейское племя низовий р. Колумбия [ Columbia River] в штате Вашингтон, насчитывало 800 человек в 1780. Ныне (1990) - 757 человек в резервациях Шолуотер [ Shoalwater Reservation], Куинаулт [ Quinault Reservation] в штате Вашингтон и др. В современных чинуках течет много полинезийской и европейской крови. В XVIII в. преимущественно занимались рыболовством и сбором ягод. Первых европейцев, описавших их (это были члены экспедиции Льюиса и Кларка [ Lewis and Clark Expedition] 1850), поразили обычаи потлача [ potlatch] и деформирования лбов и затылков детей с целью показать их принадлежность к определенной касте. Племя покупало рабов у соседних племен. До 80 процентов чинуков умерли от эпидемии оспы в 18292.Относится к чинукской группе [ Chinookan]IIЗимой - теплый, сухой ветер, дующий с восточной стороны Скалистых гор [ Rocky Mountains] и вызывающий резкое повышение температуры и обильное таяние снегов. Летом - прохладный ветер. Получил название по имени индейского племени чинук [Chinook I]
